The Hyundai Kona: Proving Good Things Come in Small (Subcompact Crossover) Packages

The Hyundai Kona is an all-new subcompact crossover for the 2018 model year, and already the vehicle has become a popular pick at our Moreno Valley dealership. Young professionals love its list of amenities and attractive price points, and it's also been a hit with parents who're looking to downsize from their larger vehicles now that the kids have left for college!

Today we'll look at what the Hyundai Kona has to offer for performance, tech, safety, and design. We'll also touch on the trim levels and the exciting and (hint) electrifying updates we can expect for 2019.

Performance

The Kona is available in four trims - SE, SEL, Limited, and Ultimate - and there are two engines. The first two trims have a 2.0L with 147 horsepower and 132 lb-ft torque. The remaining two have a 1.6L turbo engine that kicks it up a surprising notch for this segment. You'll get 175 horsepower and 195 lb-ft torque! That's an impressive amount of power for a vehicle this size, and you'll have a big smile on your face as you zip around Riverside CA and Hemet.

Technology

When you have a car that's marketed at a tech-savvy segment, it's crucial that there are standout features that're standard and available. We love the touchscreen with Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™, backup camera, wireless charging pad, very cool heads-up display, and SiriusXM radio. Check out the trim level section to see which features are available across the model lineup.

Safety

The Kona doesn't just offer drivers convenience technologies. It also has many available advanced safety features that help with crash avoidance. Examples include blind spot monitoring, pedestrian detection, and even a driver attention warning that lets you know when it's time to pull off at the next rest area. Standard safety features include Bluetooth for hands-free calling, LED daytime running lights, and backup camera.

Design

The Kona has a smooth aesthetic that is fresh-meets-stylin', and there are three different wheel designs with sizes ranging from 16-inches to 18-inches. If you want to have a more athletic edge, get a roof rail for your cargo box or bike rack.

Inside, the Kona has a fairly minimalist layout, though some trims have punchy color accents. Choose the higher trims and you'll get leather seats that add a refined touch. For cargo space you'll get 19.2 cubic feet with the seats up and 45.8 cubic feet with the back seats folded flat. You can further maximize the "seat up" cargo space with the nifty split-level cargo divider.

Trim Levels

Whether you need a crossover to commute into work from San Bernardino or you want a vehicle that'll look "at home" in front of your gorgeous spot in the Redlands, you'll have a few options.

  • SE: you'll get a standard 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay™/Android Auto™, automatic headlights, backup camera, Bluetooth, cruise control, 16-inch wheels, and a 6-way manual driver's seat.
  • SEL: get larger 17-inch wheels, 3-stage heated front seats, roof rails, blind spot collision warning with lane change assist, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, and SiriusXM radio. You can also add on the Tech Package for the SEL trim and get a sunroof, power seats with lumbar support, fog lights, and more advanced safety technologies. It's clear why this is one of our most popular trims.
  • Limited: you'll get the stronger turbo engine, 18-inch alloy wheels, sunroof, LED headlights and taillights, 8-way power driver's seat with lumbar support, and stylish leather seating upholstery.
  • Ultimate: the top trim ties it all together with class-above technologies. There's a larger 8-inch touchscreen, wireless charging pad, heads-up display, a premium audio system by Infinity, and navigation. There's also the following safety features (lane keeping assist, forward collision avoidance assist with pedestrian detection, driver attention warning, high beam assist, parking sensors), and you can get several Hyundai Blue Link Service subscriptions.

Whew, that's quite a lineup of features! At our dealership you can test drive the different trims and then meet with our financing team to go over buying or leasing options. This will help you see which ones fit your needs and budget.

Changes for 2019

The 2019 models will be arriving in late 2018, so you're probably wondering if it's worth it to wait for the next model year. Because the Kona is a new vehicle, there won't be big changes for the gasoline version, however there will be an all-new electric model! The 2019 Hyundai Kona EV is expected to have a range of 250-miles (more than any non-Tesla electric vehicle on the road) and standard advanced safety features. Keep following our blog to hear more about this upcoming variant.
